SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
The full system development lifecycle
Systems Engineering in the digital thread
Systems Engineering involves overseeing a system throughout its entire lifecycle and managing its relationships with other related systems.
This lifecycle is typically divided into distinct stages, each with its unique characteristics and purpose. According to the INCOSE (The International Council on Systems Engineering) Systems Engineering Handbook, there are six generic lifecycle stages through which a system evolves six generic lifecycle stages: Concept, Development, Production, Utilization, Support, and Retirement.
Systems engineering provides access to a common system model or set of system models, enabling engineers and those from different domains of expertise to more easily access, edit, and approve product designs.
Systems Engineering in practise
In practical Systems Engineering, several essential steps guide the process:
Step 0: Systems Engineering Process Inputs
- Begin by analyzing process inputs, which include customer needs, requirements, and project constraints (such as time, budget, and materials).
- These inputs provide context for the project and help understand the problem or status quo.
Step 1: Requirements Analysis
- Based on customer needs, analyze and define functional and performance requirements.
- Clear, concise requirements are crucial for realistic design constraints and risk evaluation.
Step 2: System Analysis Control
- Plan necessary work and activities for Systems Engineering.
- Develop scheduling, cost estimates, and technical management activities.
- Ensure traceability throughout the project.
Step 3: Functional Analysis/Allocation
- Break down higher-level functions into lower-level functions using requirements analysis.
- Describe each product’s purpose, needs, and interactions.
These core steps form any system engineering management process!
