Augmented Reality In Engineering

Everything we do in engineering – before we actually make anything – tends to boil down to information creation and delivery. If we can create and manage the correct information throughout our lifetime, we have a fantastic foundation to work with.

Inevitably a large chunk of this information needs to be passed to people to do something, such as manufacturing, assembly, service, sales, marketing, etc. in fact it will filter into almost all areas of your business.

In this area Augmented Reality can dramatically change and improve Engineering.

Whether it is fixing a circuit board, repairing equipment on-site, or working in extreme environments such as oil and gas or subsea every effort is made to ensure staff is properly trained. Unfortunately, front-line workers often find themselves in environments where they are dealing with situations that are unknown to them.

Augmented Reality (Vuforia) ensures that an individual can quickly and easily get access to site or equipment specific information due to AR being able to recognize the real-world environment, they are working in. Alternatively, they can contact a remote subject matter expert so that with the use of AR (Vuforia Chalk) they can see the real-world environment they are working in and visually direct them using graphics and voice commands.

Vuforia in the workforce

Our workforce is constantly changing and transferring skills from existing experienced staff members to new hires is always difficult, traditional training methods get us some way but are often difficult to update in a world that is constantly changing. With Augmented Reality (Vuforia Expert Capture) you can capture the skills from your very best front-line workers and pass these skills onto new members very quickly and easily. With this approach rather than a theoretical training solution via traditional methods you have training that reflects the real-world environment.

This approach can also be used to improve efficiency by creating mixed AR and real-world operating procedures that are consumed by the workforce ensuring consistent “best practices”.

Vuforia in Sales and Marketing

With the Vuforia Engine, Sales and Marketing can truly visualize completely realistic products in a real-world environment before they exist, thus giving the viewer an idea of the outcome. One can visualize photorealistic products as if they were there with the use of animation and additional information popups about the products in a 3D space around them. With the recent restrictions in transporting equipment around the world and the cancellation of many trades shows, and the popularity of AR growing, your customers or prospects can visualize your products at any scale in the actual location they are in.

Augmented Reality (AR) is changing engineering now and the benefits are clear to see. By not adapting to the adoption of AR, your business could lose out on a world of opportunities.
